Bangkok Cuisine

Thailand’s food needs little introduction.  It’s profusion of exotic flavours and fragrances make it among the most coveted of international cuisines,  as a walk through Bangkok forcefully reminds you of such seemingly inexhaustible features.  However, whether it be juicy pieces of grilled pork on a stick or a fiery bowl of ‘Tom Yum’ soup, you all have to start somewhere…….and what better place than the carefully selected delicacies which span everything from staple backpacker favourites to Thai classics.  Once you’ve tried them all, please vote for the one that really thrilled your taste buds… The quintessential Thai aroma! A bold, refreshing blend of fragrant lemongrass, chilli, galangal, lime leaves, shallots, lime juice and fish sauce shapes….. this classic soup, gives itself a legendary herbal kick. Succulent fresh prawns and straw mushrooms lend it body. A versatile dish that can fit within virtually any meal, the distinctive smell reminds you of exotic perfume, while it’s invigorating sour-spicy-hot taste just screams ‘Thailand’! Gaeng Daeng or Red Curry…….made with morsels of meat, red curry paste, smooth coconut milk and topped off with a sprinkling of finely sliced kaffir lime leaves, this rich, aromatic curry always gets those taste buds tingling. At it’s best when the meat is stunningly tender, it could be likened to a beautiful taste…… it’s mild, sweet and delicately fragrant……and like all true love affairs absence makes the heart grow fonder……if you equate it with your love and passion………for food……or is it something else?

Feeling peckish between meals and up to an elegant experience to delight your sweet tooth? Many posh hotels offer proper English afternoon tea complete with traditional English scones, clotted cream, sandwiches, pastries and other goodies. Riverside hotels are probably the best place to have afternoon tea, as you can sip your tea and take in a slice of Thai life by the Chao Praya River at the same time.

There are several upscale restaurants serving international cuisine, which are frequented by business people……. Oriental, American, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Spanish and Indian.

Wonder why there are so many great Indian Restaurants in Bangkok?  A quick look at all the Buddhist temples should give you an idea of how much India has influenced Thai culture……Dosa King……this all vegetarian restaurant has perhaps the best dosas in all of Thailand. The thin crepes made from lentil and rice batter are just the right balance of chewy and crispy. Their masala dosa………. a dosa stuffed with seasoned potatoes and onions…… is a menu favourite…… but they also serve plenty of other dishes. The restaurant is completely dry, so quench your thirst with one of their lassis or fruit juices instead of beer or wine……. Rang Mahal………many consider this the best Indian restaurant  because of it’s combination of delicious tandoori meats, excellent service and pleasant settings at the top of the Rembrandt Hotel. The upscale dining rooms and formally-dressed wait staff make this a great choice for special dinners…….Indus…….a young, hip crowd, chic and funky dining rooms and live music make Indus feel more like a club than a restaurant…… if you’re not in the mood to party don’t be put off, as there are plenty of quiet places to dine in the large mid-century house-turned-restaurant. The menu has a little of everything, including some Thai and some Mediterranean dishes, but it’s the Kashmiri food that really shines. La Scala serves the best Italian cuisine…… Lek Seawood…… in fact, the distinct absence of decor speaks volumes….. here at Lek it’s the delicious, fresh scrumptious seafood, cooked up open-air merely a few yards from where you sit…….that does the talking.

The unique flavours of Thailand need little introduction……neither does Bangkok’s famous Spice Market restaurant, a firm favourite of local Thais, expats and visitors….. with a new chef at the helm  who has introduced an interesting twist on many popular dishes……this Market is all set to boost its fan base. Tucked away in quiet corner next to a lush tropical courtyard, the multiple award-winning Spice Market is an institution for lovers of Thai food. It offers the finest selection of Thai cuisine in a setting that resembles a traditional spice market from years gone by….. an antique wooden spice cart laden with a variety of exotic spices of all colours and textures greets visitors as they enter. Bottles of spices line teak shelves, while jars and large gunnysacks filled with rice and salt sit on ledges around the room. Large sepia images of fruit and vegetables adorn the walls. Enormous mortars of heavy stones are displayed on window-like panes. Dishes are elegantly presented and garnished with the customary hand-carved vegetables…… carving demonstrations are also held in the evenings. As expected, the menu is extensive and features dishes from various regions….  each with it’s own unique influences  but focussing on Central Thailand. Every taste is catered for, with a variety of fish, pork, chicken and vegetarian dishes……  as well as fresh fruits and a selection of delectable desserts. The wine list is extensive with an impressive selection from wine-producing regions around the world, including Thai wines.

Ice cream, one of the world’s greatest inventions, has long taken it’s rightful place in everyone’s hearts …… young or old. Served previously exclusively in the bygone European royal courts, this frozen dessert was considered a delicacy so divine that, as somebody aptly put, it should be illegal……pun intended……too sweet to be consumed…..however, illegal or not….everyone  loves it….. especially when it comes with a little twist…forget – at least temporarily…….  about everyday flavours like chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, because at Amaltery, you’re in for a pleasant surprise! To the unknowing eye, Amaltery appears to be an innocent-looking ice cream parlour where kids would enjoy their chocolate sundae and banana split…….with a swapping of liquids and flavours!!!!!!

Bangkok has a tropical wet and dry climate……. with hot summers  from March to May and cool weather from November to February, while it rains through June to October.

It would be advisable to keep the current climatic update in view before the commencement of your journey…………however recommended for a visit throughout the year with the treasure trove of indoor and outdoor activities to enthrall the adults and children and the honeymooners….of course……..on this enriching………and……Exciting Bangkok Holiday Package!!!!!!
